Botany towards SDGs: from local to Global Partnership
Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Burapha University co-hosted the 15th Botanical Conference of Thailand (BCT15) with Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Khon Kaen University; Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, Kasetsart University; and Botanical Society of Thailand from 9th to 11th June, 2023 at Faculty of Science, Burapha University. This significant annual conference played a pivotal role in enhancing the knowledge exchange and establishing collaborations among delegates working on plant sciences. In addition, with the conference theme “Botany towards SDGs: from local to global partnership”, this academic event served as an exceptional platform to mark a significant milestone in propelling Botany towards a greener and more sustainable future.
One of the key highlights of the conference was the panel discussion focusing on how Botany aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), entitled “Botany towards SDGs: from local to global partnership” held on 10th June, 2023. The discussion brought together the prominent panelists from diverse organizations including Dr. Piyakaset Suksathan, Director of Horticulture Development Department at the Botanical Garden Organization; Dr. Nuwong Chollacoop, Director of Low-carbon Energy Research Group at the National Energy Technology Center; Dr. Pattakorn Varayonpinit, Deputy Secretary General of the Chonburi Chamber of Commerce. Moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phiangphak Sukkharak from Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Burapha University, the panel discussion provided a valuable platform for the experts to exchange the information, ideas, and insights regarding how plant sciences and plant scientists contribute to SDGs, further fostering the collaboration, and promoting advancements to fulfill the sustainable development goals.
Dr. Nuwong Chollacoop’s insightful information shed light on the global, regional, and Thai progress made so far in the activities that contribute to SDGs and where they are headed. As a botanist, Dr Piyakaset Suksathan presented the vision of the Botanical Garden Organization which is “The World Class Botanic Garden for Sustainable Future” and the mission statement that “To be the world-class standard botanic garden through ex-situ conservation, research and creative value-added for the sustainability of biodiversity”. He also mentioned about Biodiversity credits or Biocredits which is the incentive-type mechanism to measure the impacts of biodiversity on development sites and stewardship sites. This mechanism helps to manage biodiversity as an asset and has the potential to create and sustain biodiversity conservation impacts in the long term. Finally, Dr. Pattakorn Varayonpinit shared information on funding opportunities designed to encourage the researchers who contribute plant knowledge to the business. He also emphasised examining the products of lemongrass and melon, which are the current collaboration projects between the Faculty of Science of Burapha University and the Chonburi Chamber of Commerce.
Ultimately, the session emphasised the active participation of Botany as an indispensable element for effectively attaining our shared SDGs objectives and the importance of fostering robust collaboration of both local and global scales.
