Cultural Learning Activity: The Chinese New Year Potluck Party 2024

Acquiring cultural knowledge, understanding similarities and differences, and respecting others is critical to becoming an effective global citizen. These are also considered intercultural competence, which is one of the most essential 21st-century skills and lifelong learning skills. To offer quality education and students opportunities to learn and interact with people from diverse cultures, the B.A. program of Burapha University International College (BUUIC) organized the Chinese New Year Potluck Party 2024 on Feb 6, 2024 as a cultural learning activity of a course named ‘Intercultural Communication.’ The main goal of the party was to support Thai and international students in their learning to be curious, open-minded, and respectful of their own and others’ cultures. The participants, including faculty members, supporting staff, and students, are Thai, Thai-Chinese, Thai-German, Bruneian, Filipino, and Canadian. The participants had opportunities to try mainly Thai-Chinese dishes and cultural activities including Chi Chi Sticks and Hongbao. The participants shared that they had so much fun and their cultural knowledge was gained such as ‘This is truly what an exchange program should be.’, said one of the exchange students, and ‘I loved the activities as they incorporated learning about the culture while having fun!’ BUUIC will continuously design, develop, and organize these types of activity for students’ growth and ensure the quality education in an intercultural environment.
