The World Glaucoma Week Event 2024

Glaucoma is a group of diseases characterized by damage to the optic nerve, which can lead to vision loss or blindness. Key risk factors for developing glaucoma include high eye pressure. People with glaucoma may not notice any symptoms until the disease has progressed to a severe stage. The serious consequences of this condition cannot be reversed, so it is important to identify high-risk groups and screen them at the appropriate time, as well as to regularly examine the eyes to prevent, control, and delay permanent vision loss.

The Faculty of Medicine, Burapha University, participated in the World Glaucoma Week event from March 11th to 15th, 2024. The event was held at Burapha University Hospital and aimed to educate the general public, patients, their families, and healthcare professionals about glaucoma. Activities included screenings, educational videos, and distributing informational materials to raise awareness about the importance of glaucoma, risk factors, early diagnosis, and prevention of vision loss from glaucoma.

The Faculty of Medicine, Burapha University, is determined to organize this project to help enhance understanding and develop the abilities of participants in transferring knowledge to close associates, colleagues, and the general public.

         Impacts of this project

  1. Participants understand the importance of the risk factors for developing glaucoma and the screening for glaucoma to diagnose the condition early, thus enabling prevention of vision impairment caused by glaucoma.

  2. Participants are aware of the importance of disseminating knowledge to close individuals, colleagues, and the general public, informing them of the significance and encouraging them to undergo screening at the appropriate times.

The evaluation of satisfaction among participants of the World Glaucoma Week project, revealed that overall assessment is at the highest level.
