Training activity providing fundamental knowledge of gemstones
to Jewelry Design students from Silpakorn University

On March 7th and 8th, 2024, Assistant Professor Dr. Nantharat Bunnag (acting dean of the Faculty of Gems) welcomed Assistant Professor Dr. Pathamaphurn Praphitphongwanit, Dr. Onuma Wichaikul, and 18 Jewelry Design students from Silpakorn University to visit the Faculty of Gems, Burapha University, Chanthaburi Campus. The purpose of this visit was to attend lectures to gain knowledge and understanding in the field of gems, including basic scientific tools and equipment necessary for preliminary gem testing and analysis. Practical training was also conducted to enhance practical skills in gem testing and analysis, with Assistant Professor Dr. Nantharat Bunnag serving as the lecturer. Additionally, they visited the jewelry manufacturing facility where Assistant Professor Rungrote Yingsa-nga delivered a lecture on the tools and equipment used in jewelry production, including handmade and machine-made jewelry production processes, as well as the tools, equipment, and technologies used in contemporary jewelry industry factories.

The objective of this activity is to enhance understanding among jewelry design students from Silpakorn University regarding the specific characteristics of each type of gem, including shape, luster, brilliance, color, and other relevant aspects. These attributes influence the design of jewelry or settings. The aim is to enable participants to understand the physical properties of gems and design jewelry that complements various types of gems appropriately. Additionally, the aim is to ensure that the designs align with the artistic and industrial production of jewelry in Thailand in the future.
