Expansion of the Blue Swimming Crab Bank for Conservation
and Sustainable Community Development
The Blue Swimming Crab Bank Project has been continuously conducted by the Faculty of Science at Burapha University. The project aims to provide the fishing community with accurate knowledge about blue swimming crabs and encourage other fishing communities to participate in aquatic animal conservation to increase the crab population in natural habitats. It also promotes sustainable activities related to blue swimming crabs. On December 18, 2023, the Faculty of Science, led by Associate Professor Dr. Jariyawadee Suriyaphan and Dr. Patcharee Thong-ampai, along with researchers from the Blue Swimming Crab Bank Expansion Project in collaboration with the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), organized a study tour of a model blue swimming crab bank to share lessons for the sustainable development of crab bank activities at the Blue Swimming Crab Conservation Bank, a community enterprise called “Ban Pak Khlong” in Chonburi province.
The event aimed to allow members of the “Kaoyot” Small Fishing Boat Community Enterprise Blue Swimming Crab Bank, led by Ms. Duangkamol Romruen, the bank’s president, to exchange knowledge on product improvement and marketing with the Ban Pak Khlong Community Enterprise. The discussion was joined by Mr. Saroj Suparat, president of the Ban Pak Khlong Blue Swimming Crab Bank, Ms. Jiraporn Phlanan, president of the community enterprise, and Ms. Pornpimon Phlanan, the vice president and secretary, who shared knowledge and insights with the local community on sustainable fisheries management and aquaculture.
In addition to these community activities, the project also provided knowledge and hands-on activities, such as a demonstration on how to make Chakram cake, made from Chakram, a beneficial mangrove herb, as well as fabric dyeing using mangrove plants. There was also a presentation on using natural materials like bamboo, which are waste products from mussel farming, to make various utensils, promoting the reduction of plastic use and environmental friendliness. These activities aim to support sustainable local occupations and businesses for the community.
